The attendance at the 141st Kentucky Derby set a record for the event with a crowd of 170,513 on hand Saturday. The previous record of 165,307 was set in 2012. That race was won by I’ll Have Another.

The favorite throughout the lead up to this year’s race had been American Pharoah. The horse, trained by Bob Baffert, landed in the No. 18 gate during Wednesday’s post-position draw but was pushed one gate further inside, to the No. 17 position, when Stanford withdrew.

Speedy bay colt American Pharoah won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, fighting off a stretch sprint by Firing Line to claim the victory. The win marks the third consecutive time the odds-on favorite has won at Churchill Downs, as well as the second consecutive Derby win for jockey Victor Espinoza, who last year rode California Chrome to the winner’s circle.

Both American Pharoah and Dortmund, who finished third, were saddled by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, whose steeds have now claimed four Derby titles. American Pharoah will head to the Preakness Stakes in two weeks in hopes of conquering the second leg of the ever-elusive Triple Crown, a prize last claimed by Affirmed in 1978.
