Webb Simpson – 2012 U.S. Open® Champion!

Congratulations to Webb Simpson for winning the 2012 U.S. Open Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA.  While the Lake Course at the Olympic Club was a very gracious host to the fans and spectators, it proved to be a challenge for golf’s greatest golfers as one after another faltered throughout the tournament.  Webb Simpson won the championship with a +1 score of 281.

The excitement for the four-day tournament started on Thursday and Friday for the rare grouping of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Bubba Watson.  Unfortunately, watching this great threesome for 36 holes of great golf never materialized as Mickelson and Watson struggled – however, Tiger Woods was in the hunt and leading after the first two rounds.

On Saturday, Tiger Woods fell apart two bogeys in the first three holes and shot a 75 for the day.  On Sunday, it appeared to be down to two former U.S. Open Champions.   Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell were in the lead until Simpson got hot on one of the course’s most difficult holes, number six.  He birdied this six, seven, and eight to begin his rise to the top of the leaderboard.  After McDowell and Furyk failed to birdie number eighteen to tie Simpson, he won his first U.S. Open and first major championship.
