2011 Winner Animal Kingdom enjoys victory with jockey John Velazquez

The 2011 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs was one for the memories.  Congratulations to Animal Kingdom (with 21-1 odds) for winning the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby on his first race on a dirt surface.

It was a day in which the best contenders were unable to even show.  This includes Dialed In, the morning favorite and Twice the Appeal, whose jockey had won the 2007, 2009, and 2010 Kentucky Derby as they finished 8th and 10th respectively.  Another favorite, Pants on Fire, finished ninth.

With a record-setting crowd of 164,858 people at Churchill Downs on hand to watch the Derby, Shackelford held the lead near the rail, followed by Nehro and Animal Kingdom on the outside as the three horses headed down the final stretch.  In the end Animal Kingdom won the 2011 Kentucky Derby by a length.

According to Princeton Group’s clients at the event, it was one of the most exciting and unlikely finishes at a Kentucky Derby in years.  Our clients attended great events such as the Barnstable-Brown Gala, stayed in five-star accommodations such as the Galt House, and enjoyed the Kentucky Derby in the Turf Club, 3rd Floor Clubhouse, Millionaires Row, as well as the grandstand seats.  There are so many great restaurants and events to enjoy in Louisville during Kentucky Derby weekend that it has become a must-see sporting event for our customers.
